# Nhost > Nhost is a managed backend platform providing a Postgres database with pgvector, an instant role-based GraphQL API, authentication, file storage, serverless functions, custom containers and an AI toolkit. It is built to be a backend for agentic AI: the Backend MCP Server exposes a project's GraphQL API to MCP clients with every operation running under the calling user's own permissions, agents authenticate through Nhost's OAuth2/OIDC provider, and embeddings live in the same Postgres database as the rest of the application. Notes for interpreting these docs: - Every project is addressed by a `subdomain` and a `region`, which together form service URLs such as `https://{subdomain}.auth.{region}.nhost.run/v1`. - The GraphQL API is generated from your Postgres schema, with role-based permissions declared as metadata rather than written in application code. - Two engines can serve that API. Constellation is Nhost's own GraphQL engine, a Hasura-compatible drop-in replacement that runs the same traffic on around 90% less memory. It is alpha and opt-in today: enabled per project through an `[experimental.constellation]` block in `nhost.toml`, running alongside Hasura rather than replacing it, and set to become the default over time. Both engines expose the same API, so these docs say 'the GraphQL API' rather than naming an engine. - Nhost has two MCP servers. The Backend MCP Server exposes a project's own GraphQL API to assistants, authenticating end users through Nhost Auth so every operation runs with that user's permissions. The CLI MCP server runs locally, authenticates as you, and manages local and Nhost Cloud projects; its Cloud schema is linked below. - The `@nhost/nhost-js` SDK is the primary client and wraps auth, storage, GraphQL and functions in a single client. - The Auth and Storage REST APIs have machine-readable OpenAPI specs; see the optional links below rather than inferring endpoints from prose. ## Documentation Sets - [Abridged documentation](https://docs.nhost.io/llms-small.txt): a compact version of the documentation for Nhost, with non-essential content removed - [Complete documentation](https://docs.nhost.io/llms-full.txt): the full documentation for Nhost ## Notes - The complete documentation includes all content from the official documentation - The content is automatically generated from the same source as the official documentation ## Optional - [Auth API OpenAPI specification](https://docs.nhost.io/openapi/auth.json): Complete OpenAPI 3.0 spec for the Nhost Authentication API.
